Truckers offer up their best advice for life on the road in
Progressive Commercial auto insurance Truck Tips contest
MAYFIELD VILLAGE, Ohio — May 19, 2009 — With about 2,000 entries in six different categories the choice wasn't easy, but there could be only one $5,000 grand prize winner in Progressive's commercial auto insurance Truck Tips contest.
Timothy Gibbons of San Francisco, Calif., was the lucky truck insurance tipster with the following submission in the "Funny" category: When you come to a fork in the road, don't use it to eat your lunch. You never know where it's been.
Gibbons' grand-prize winning truck tip will also be featured in a Progressive Commercial truck insurance radio ad.
"We had some great submissions which prove that not only do truckers have great common sense advice, they've also got a great sense of humor," said Tom Corpus, with Progressive's commercial auto insurance group.
In addition to the grand prize winner, six people won $500 each for individual category submissions:
- Fuel Savings Tip — Stay back, stay safe and save fuel. Staying back gives you more time for braking and time to downshift. It saves fuel and your brakes, too. — Donna Hodge, Stratford, Wis.
- On-the-Road Tip — During bug season, spray the grille of your truck with non-stick cooking spray, and bugs won't stick. — Audrey Pruett, Palatka, Fla.
- On-the-Job Tip — On a snowy evening, drape a tarp over your windshield and hood, closing the sides in the driver and passenger doors. In the morning, open the doors and pull off the tarp. No scraping, brushing or snow up your sleeves. — Kelly Mytych, North Scituate, R.I.
- Vehicle and Driving Tip — Glue a small piece of Velcro® under your dash and glue another small piece to your thermos. Now your thermos is conveniently at your fingertips and not rolling around. — Kathy Zukowski, Scranton, Pa.
- Safety Tip — Better let the wife pack your first-aid kit. Electrical tape and a cough drop don't quite cut it! — Rhonda Mason, Guilford, Maine.
- Funny Tip — Pay attention to the signs for soft shoulders. Remember, they aren't for caressing or snuggling. — Patricia Sennett, Toledo, Ohio.
The Progressive Truck Tips contest was open from October 2008 through March 2009. Truckers, and anyone interested in trucking, submitted their best original advice online at the Progressive Truck Tips Web site. To read more Truck Tips contest submissions, log on to www.progressivetrucktips.com.
