MAYFIELD VILLAGE, Ohio — May 28, 2002 —How well would your car protect you and your passengers in a 40-mile-an-hour crash? To find out how the 2002 models of the Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Acura TL, Hyundai XG300/XG350, Lexus ES 300 and IS 300, Saab 9-5, Volvo S60 and Jaguar X-Type would fare, visit progressive.com to see video of the latest Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) high-speed crash tests, released today.
In an IIHS high-speed test, the driver's side of the vehicle hits a deformable barrier at 40 miles per hour. Thus, a relatively small area of the vehicle's front-end structure must absorb and manage the crash energy. The IIHS performs these tests to determine a vehicle's crashworthiness and ranks each vehicle based on the results, assigning each with a rating of good, acceptable, marginal or poor.
The Progressive group of companies features IIHS crash test videos on progressive.com, along with other valuable insurance and related information to help consumers make more informed decisions. Progressive.com receives more than 1.2 million unique visitors each month and is the only site to be named number one Insurance Carrier Web Site by Gomez six times in a row. Through its scorecards, Gomez guides consumers in making transactions online.
All 2002 models tested, except for the Hyundai XG300/XG350, earned "good" ratings for structural performance in the offset test; the Hyundai earned an "acceptable" structural rating.
"How vehicles perform in crashes affects auto insurance rates," said Toby Alfred, site manager, progressive.com. "Auto insurance companies use a lot of information about you, your driving history and your vehicle make and model to come up with the most accurate rate possible. If you have a vehicle that doesn't perform well in a crash, it could cost you more to repair the vehicle and it could cost you more to insure it."
