Four Small SUVs Crash Tested at 40 MPH: Video on progressive.com

MAYFIELD VILLAGE, Ohio — July 9, 2002 —Nearly four million SUVs were sold in 2001, according to auto industry sales data. If you're one of the millions of people shopping for an SUV, you'll want to go to progressive.com to check out the latest Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) high-speed crash test videos for four small SUVs including the 2002 Honda CR-V, 2003 Subaru Forester, 2002 Saturn VUE and the 2002 Land Rover Freelander. Vehicles that perform well in high-speed crash tests can offer better protection to their passengers and can cost less to insure. The Progressive group of companies (NYSE: PGR) has featured IIHS crash test videos on progressive.com since November 2000 to help consumers make more informed vehicle purchase decisions.

The IIHS high-speed crash test evaluation reflects a vehicle's performance in a 40-mile-an-hour frontal-offset crash test, where the driver's side hits a deformable barrier, so a relatively small area of the vehicle's front-end structure must absorb and manage the crash energy. Based on the results of these tests, the IIHS evaluates crashworthiness, assigning each vehicle an overall rating from good to poor.

The 2002 Honda CR-V, 2003 Subaru Forester and 2002 Saturn VUE all earned the Institute's highest rating of "good" overall with the CR-V and Forester receiving "best pick" designations. The 2002 Land Rover Freelander earned an overall rating of "acceptable."

"Adding more small SUVs to those with good ratings is further proof that manufacturers are working to improve the performances of their new designs in offset tests," says Brian O'Neill, IIHS president. "This will mean improved protection for people in serious real-world crashes."

"Vehicles that help to minimize injuries are not only safer, they can keep overall claims costs down and can cost less to insure," says Toby Alfred, site manager, progressive.com.

Progressive.com receives more than one million unique visitors a month and was recently ranked the number one Insurance Carrier Web Site for the sixth consecutive time by Gomez, a leading e-commerce authority. It is the only auto insurance Web site where consumers can view vehicle crash test results and then check out the insurance rates for the vehicle from Progressive and other leading companies.

The Progressive group of insurance companies, in business since 1937, ranks fourth in the nation for auto insurance and provides drivers with competitive rates and 24/7 service. The companies offer insurance by phone at 1-800-PROGRESSIVE, online at progressive.com and through more than 30,000 independent insurance agencies.
